Journal of the APA to flip to Open Access July 9

The Editorial Team of JAPA is delighted to announce that all articles accepted for publication in the Journal of the American Philosophical Association from July 9 onwards will be Open Access, published with a Creative Commons license and freely available to read online.

We have an Open Access option for every author: the costs of open access publication will be covered through agreements between the publisher and the author’s institution, payment of APCs (Article Processing Charges) from grants or other funds, or else waived entirely, ensuring every author can publish and enjoy the benefits of Open Access.

The Journal of the American Philosophical Association aims to publish philosophical work of the highest quality in any area of philosophy. The editors are committed to:

• Publishing papers that go out on a limb, papers that start trends rather than merely adding epicycles to going trends
• Publishing papers on topics that draw from and appeal to diverse philosophical constituencies and traditions
• Publishing readable papers that can be appreciated by philosophers not already steeped in the subject matter

In our newest "how can we help you?" thread a reader asks:

How do you start a new academic journal?

Who (think: career stage) should start a new academic journal?

Should you even bother...?

These are all good questions, though I expect the answers to each of them are likely to be long and contested. 

Any readers with experience willing to weigh in?

New Journal - "Passion: The Journal of the European Philosophical Society for the Study of Emotions"

Alfred Archer (Tilburg University) writes in:

We are delighted to announce the launch of the new, open-access philosophy journal, Passion: The Journal of the European Philosophical Society for the Study of Emotions. The journal arises out of the European Philosophical Society for the Study of Emotions (EPSSE), which recently held its 10^th Annual Conference in Tartu, Estonia. The journal aims to continue EPSSE’s pluralistic approach to the philosophical study of emotions by publishing work from analytic  philosophers  of  emotions, phenomenologists, ethicists, political theorists, hermeneuticians, experimental philosophers and more. We hope to transcend the analytic and continental  divide, while also conceiving of the journal  as  an outlet for interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and feminist work. We are especially interested in work that speaks beyond sub-disciplinary boundaries and is of interest to a broad audience of scholars working on emotions.

Our newly published first issue exemplifies the diverse and vibrant kind of work that we are interested in publishing. We have work on the ethics and value of revenge from Myisha Cherry and Alice MacLachlan;  an investigation of the role of emotions in mental health and illness from Michelle Maiese; a phenomenological analysis of grief beyond the context of the death of a loved one from Matthew Ratcliffe and Louise Richardson; a detailed examination of the role of envy in transitional justice from Emanuela Ceva and Sara Protasi; and a careful analysis of the diversity of human affective reactions to robots from Alessandra Fussi.

The journal is fully open access and the first issue can be downloaded for free here: https://passion-journal.org/index As well as being free to download, the journal is also free for authors, with no fees involved for submission or publication. This has been made possible by the support of EPSSE and our publisher Open Press TiU, which is part of the Open Science Action Plan of Tilburg University. We are especially grateful to Daan Rutten, Tilburg University’s open science coordinator who was crucial in helping us turn our idea into a reality.

We would like to encourage all philosophers working on issues related to emotions to submit their work to Passion and to help make this a vibrant forum for philosophical work on emotions.

New editorial team at Philosophia

Mitch Green and the Associate Editors at Philosophia write in:

The journal Philosophia has a new editorial team. Mitch Green of the Univ. of Connecticut recently stepped in as Editor-in-Chief and longtime Editor Asa Kasher will remain as Co-Editor-in-Chief with Mitch until stepping down at the end of 2022. (Associate Editor Amir Horowitz will also remain in his position until the end of 2022.) The journal also has a new team of Associate Editors, namely Emma Gordon (Glasgow); Polycarp Ikuenobe (Kent State); Iris Vidmar Jovanović (Rijeka); Jan Michel (Düsseldorf); Linda Radzik (Texas A&M). Kaley Rittichier (Connecticut) is currently serving as Managing Editor. It is expected that at least one more Associate Editor will be appointed in the coming months. Philosophia remains a general philosophy journal and welcomes broadly accessible submissions on all topics of current philosophical interest. Philosophia will continue to commission Author-Meets-Critics symposia, and starting in 2023 will commission state-of-the art essays accessible to a wide audience. Due to the growing number of high-quality submissions, the journal has moved from publishing four issues per year to five.

How to become a journal editor?

In our newest "how can we help you?" thread, a reader asks:

How to become a journal editor? Is the correct answer: "become famous and be invited"? Is the more detailed answer: publish in the journal, review for the journal, guest-edit for the journal, get invited to serve the editorial board, get invited to become AE and eventually get invited to become the EiC?

I have the luck of being invited to the editorial board of my favourite journal (after publishing, reviewing and editing special issues for the journal - and other journals). I have met the EiC, and the line of communication is open. Can I simply express my interest to the editor(s) - perhaps after serving the journal well from the board position? I guess it is the EiC who nominates associate editors, but when it comes to nominating EiC, does, for instance, the publisher have an opinion/veto etc.? I think the discussion on this might be useful for others as well - given the large number of submissions any decent journal receives, it would be good if more people were willing to become editors.

These are excellent questions, and I'd love to hear from readers in the know.
