Over the The Splintered Mind, Eric Scwitzgebel (UC Riverside) has a great new post up on trends in the academic market for tenured positions in philosophy. In the post, Schwitzgebel compares trends for senior philosophy positions to trends in the reports on junior tenure-track jobs that I have given here at the Cocoon over a similar period of years (see here). Here are two graphs summarizing his findings (note: there was one year that I did not collect or report on the junior TT market, so that's the gap in the orange line on the second graph):
Long story short: there are a lot more junior tenure-track jobs each year than senior tenured ones--but the overall trends seem similar. There were a lot more senior jobs in the early 2000's. However, since 2015 both job markets have been relatively 'flat', with a steep drop off in both types of jobs (but especially junior TT jobs) this past year due to the COVID pandemic. Anyway, kudos to Schwitzgebel for collecting and reporting this data!
