I have an undergraduate student who is interested in reading up on the topics of essence and existence. These are not exactly my areas, to put it mildly. Anyone have any helpful suggestions (good books, review articles, etc.) suitable for smart undergraduate? Thanks!

E.J. Lowe's 2008 paper 'Two Notions of Being: Entity and Essence' is a good place to start. But it depends a bit on what exactly this student is interested in, the theme is rather broad. My book 'An Introduction to Metametaphysics' (2015, CUP) might be useful.

Another useful place to start is the chapter ' Being and Essence' in Kris McDaniel's *The Fragmentation of Being* (2017, OUP). Tons of interesting discussion on the topic, and plenty of references (both classic and contemporary). There's a lot more to recommend, but it's a rather broad topic. Is there some more specific issue your student is interested in?
