In a forthcoming paper in PPR, Ryan Preston-Roedder argues that faith in humanity, understood as a kind of profound faith in people's decency, is a moral virtue. Although I found the paper interesting, I can't help but offer this up as a refutation (thanks to Feminist Philosophers for the link to this awfulness). And of course this. And this. And this. I could go on.
I am only half-serious, of course. Citing cases doesn't engage with Preston-Roedder's argument. Still, I'm half-tempted to "go Moorean", point to cases, and say, "There, I win. Human beings clearly don't deserve faith in their decency. Good people earn belief in their decency, and bad people earn the opposite." But what do I know?Post a comment
