Tim

The Kansas State search was canceled.

An anonymous philosopher

Here's what I've collated from another forum, one that I imagine most of you would not want to visit:

- University of Oregon [AOS: environmental] has conducted interviews.

- San Diego State University [AOS: environmental] has conducted interviews.

- Trinity College Dublin [AOS: metaphysics and language] has sent out PFOs.

- University of Auckland [AOS: open] has an offer out.

- St. Norbert College [AOS: a random disjunction] has scheduled interviews.

R

Hi Tim,

Out of curiosity, any word on why it was canceled? Thanks!

Info offered

The Kansas State search was canceled because of budget cuts at the university level.

Tim

No word (that I've gotten). When the philjobs ad expired early, I sent an inquiry (from my anonymous account). Was told it was canceled, and that's it.

I suspect it's for the usual bullshit HR/admin/money-type reasons. But that's just an irresponsible guess.

Amanda

Marcus a while back someone posted something about balancing things as a new professor (wasn't me, haha). But anyway you said you were going to do a post on it. Not sure if you were waiting or just forgot but I thought I'd mention it.

Marcus Arvan

Hi Amanda: I haven’t forgotten. I’ve had a draft of a post for a bit now, but haven’t been satisfied enough with it to post on it yet. I’ll do my best to get it up soon!

Amanda

Okay thanks!

Tim

In case anyone wanted to know, this job:

https://philjobs.org/job/show/8830

Has a 5/4 teaching load. I know because I asked.

R

Thanks Info offered and Tim! Glad I didn't work on my application yet...

Nick

I made the mistake of checking the Wiki today. Shouldn't have. I guess I really have to work on that akrasia thing to salvage my mental health.

Tim

Got a response from an alt-ac job I applied for. They asked about my "salary requirements". So I looked into what they usually pay people in the position I was applying for. Turns out it's a lot. So it looks like if I end up leaving philosophy, at least I've got a good shot at being rich.

Marcus Arvan

Tim: so cool to hear that! If you take the job (or even if you get offered it but take an academic job instead), would you perhaps consider sharing your story on the Cocoon? It might help others better understand the alt-ac market and how to be successful on it.

Amanda

Good luck Tim and Congrats! I'd love to hear how it turns out too.

Job Market Candidate #48423

The University of Florida has started requesting letters of reference from selected applicants.

Job Market Candidate #48423

The University of North Carolina Wilmington has sent out interview requests.

another postdoc

Pretty early PFO from Colorado Springs.

lategrad

UC Irvine (LPS) has started asking for additional writing samples (about a week ago). I got an automated email, and submitted through the application site. So I'm not sure whether this is a good sign--maybe it was easier for them to ask everybody for extra samples.

Mac

Northwestern has held initial skype interviews.

Number Three

For all the Northwestern jobs?

Mac

Number Three, sorry I wasn't more specific; all I know about is the philosophy of language position.

midwest lecturer

Rejection letter from U North Carolina Wilmington. Over 200 applicants.

Amanda

I have just been glancing at phil jobs and it seems like there are less jobs than usual. Do I seem right about this? What is everyone's impression?

Andrea

Amanda: If you click on "advanced search" you can include expired ads and search for ads posted within a given period.
June 1 to Dec. 7 2017: 377 ads
June 1 to Dec. 7 2016: 284 ads.
Of course, whoever is interested can do more refined searches by area, type of position etc.

Andrea

oops, I meant 384 ads not 284

Amanda

Thanks Andrea. So a few less jobs but that doesn't mean much until we know the break down with tt and such. I think I am noticing more "instructor" positions than before, but I could be wrong of course.

anonymous TT prof

Amanda:

Totals 2017 vs 2016 for 6/1 to present
377 vs. 387 All jobs
149 vs. 169 “fixed term”
195 vs. 193 “tenure track or similar”
55 vs. 69 “tenured, continuing or permanent”
11 vs. 22 “contract type open”

It looks like the difference in number is mostly due to a *decrease* in "fixed term" positions. These jobs are often double- or miscategorized, and so this is not an exact science. But just from the search function, it seems the number of tenured or tenure track jobs is pretty static. Maybe with a few more (10?) "open rank" or tenured positions advertised last year as opposed to this year.

Amanda

Thanks TT prof that is really interesting! While the TT jobs staying static isn't good news given how bad the market was last year, at least it isn't getting worse like in some professions. Of course, arguably each year there is a back up of people on the market which might make it slightly harder to get a TT gig.

Only Wednesday

Anyone has any update not reflected on the wiki on:

- San Diego State
- U. of Oregon (Philosophy/Environmental Studies)
- Centre College
- Northeastern (Applied Ethics)
- Santa Clara (Applied Ethics)

Curious Individual

Mac, any idea when Northwestern will decide fly-outs for the language job?

Mac

Curious Individual, I wish I knew!

atratus

University of Oregon has made fly-out decisions.

Anonymous ABD

Does anyone have any updates on the Hope College search? Thanks.

Anonymous

Any word on the Temple job? Thanks.

Another Anonymous

Hope College solicited a statement of faith a couple weeks ago.

midwest lecturer

Re: Hope College. I am surprised to hear that Hope narrowed its search and did not let others know. When I received my submission acknowledgment, I got this message included this:

"We will notify you via email throughout the search process as we narrow our candidate field."

Only Wednesday

midwest lecturer, that's because you didn't have faith or hope

anon

RE: Hope again. Did not get a request for a statement, but did get an email today saying that they will let people know about their applications in January. Maybe we all got this?

dude

I received the same sort of message from Hope today (without a prior statement of faith solicitation). I'm guessing you're correct and we all got this.

Anonymous ABD

Yup. Same here re Hope.

midwest lecturer

Only Wednesday, I may not have faith or hope, but I did get that message!

Anon student

I heard that Hope has started scheduling interviews.

Does anyone have any news on the University of Toronto job in MandE?

askingforafriend

If you had to guesstimate, what % of job statuses are reported on the phylo wiki?

Curious

Has anyone heard anything about the U Florida lectureship? I got notified that they pulled letters of rec on 12/1 but nothing since then.

exhausted

Anyone have news on whether Centre has scheduled campus visits?

ABD

Any news on the American University of Paris? The email I received said they would begin working through applications in December. There's nothing on the wiki, it seems.

Nick

ABD, I wish I had news. It may still be early, though. If the job is not listed on the wiki you can add it. If someone has info they will update. (I have chosen not to visit the wiki this season.)

Hang on

American U in Paris has scheduled first-round interviews today.

Curious Individual

Anyone who interviewed at Milwaukee willing to share your area? Anyone happen to know how many they interviewed?

Happy Friday

Anyone got an email from Suffolk (I didn't)? There's confusing info on the wiki.

Lauren

I go the Suffolk rejection email. It said that there were approximately 300 applications, and I had not been selected to interview.

Endless Apps

I also got no email from Suffolk one way or the other.

Here's Hoping

Has anyone who submitted further materials to Regis in December heard anything?

Anonymous

Has anyone heard about on-campus interviews from Haverford? I had a first round and then...nada. No update on the wiki and Haverford is out for break. Thoughts?

Anon

Here's Hoping: I submitted materials to Regis. I have not heard anything either. Does anyone have an idea how many of us were asked to submit additional materials? It sounded like they were doing that in place of skype interviews.

Taco Tuesday

Anyone knows what happened at San Diego State? Was the search successful as the wiki indicates?

anonymous

yes, San Diego State hired someone.

James

Anyone know what's up with Southern Methodist University? Nov 1 deadline, no news anywhere.
