I wrote about this a few years ago, but it's something I still struggle with: the very first day of classes. I've tried all kinds of things over the years--everything from simply going over the syllabus and letting students go early, to teaching actual philosophy, to "icebreakers", and so on--and yet I never feel like I've "mastered" the first day. Actually, that's an understatement. I've been teaching for well over ten years, and I still feel like I have no clue how to make the first day of class fun and engaging. And so I come to you, my fellow Cocooners, to ask for suggestions. What do you do on the first day? Thanks, in advance, to everyone who chimes in!
